Karate Style

Enshin Karate is a style of "full contact karate," also known as knockdown karate. It was founded by Kancho Joko Ninomiya in 1988. While rooted in traditional karate, Enshin Karate distinguishes itself by incorporating techniques like sweeps, grabs, throws, and takedowns, drawing influence from styles like Judo and Jujitsu.

Key Characteristics of Enshin Karate:

Sabaki Method:

This is a central concept where practitioners learn to utilize an opponent's power and momentum against them by shifting into a "blind spot" position, allowing for counterattacks.

Circular Movement:

Enshin Karate emphasizes circular movement, enabling practitioners to avoid attacks and create opportunities for counterattacks.

Full Contact:

Enshin Karate is known for its full contact sparring and emphasis on techniques that can knock down an opponent.

Practical Self-Defence:

The style focuses on developing a practical system of empty-handed self-defence. Our self-defence classes are designed to teach practical techniques that can be used in real-world situations. We focus on situational awareness, de-escalation techniques, and physical self-defence to help our students stay safe.

Distinction from other Karate Styles:

While Enshin Karate shares common roots with traditional karate styles like Shito-Ryu, Goju-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, and Shotokan, it incorporates techniques and concepts not typically found in those styles. The inclusion of grappling techniques and the Sabaki method are key differentiators.
